Passing of an Officer
Officer Sam ReyesIt was 3 years ago today, we lost a good friend and great man. Officer Sam Reyes, Star # 2623, who had just gone on-duty, passed away from a heart attack. I think about him every day and miss our 3-minute conversations that lasted for over a half hour. Sam was greatly appreciated by the Potrero community in which he served for over three decades. Gone but never forgotten. Rest in Peace, Sam. |

Passing of an Officer
Officer Roberto Ortega
It is with sadness that I tell of San Francisco Patrol Special
Police Officer
Roberto Ortega, star # 2608, passing, February 24, 2020. Officer Ortega worked Southern, Mission,
Central, and Northern until his stroke last year. He had been
hospitalized then bedridden and was not able to recover.
Officer Ortega received a Captain's Commendation in 2008 for catching and arresting an attempted rapist in the Northern District. His quick actions of alerting dispatch of the situation and making the arrest shows the professionalism Officer Ortega showed every day he was on duty. He leaves behind many family members and friends. Funeral arraignments are in the works. We will miss you brother. Peace. |

Antjuan Taswell scores again!Yesterday, 6/25, The San Francisco Department of Mental Health bestowed and award to Patrol Special Officer Antjuan Taswell for recognition for his service above and beyond his normal duties. Ms. Helynna Brooke, Board Member of the council, witnessed firsthand Officer Taswell’s interaction with several people, at several different days and times, with severe mental health issues and treated them with dignity and respect, addressing their problems in a calm and trusting way and his ability to safely defuse a situation that was about to turn ugly. If you remember, 2 years ago, Officer Taswell, on his way to Mission station to start his shift, kept a woman with suicidal tendencies from jumping off the San Francisco Bay Bridge, by using verbal tact as well as his strength to detain her until the Highway Patrol responded. It is this kind of “patrol special” officer the citizens of San Francisco, the Police Department, our Association and the Castro District are proud to have working its streets, and who is very much appreciated by all.

Passing of an Officer
Richard
(Dick) Peter Sousa, was a San Francisco Patrol Special
Police Officer for approximately 45 years. He was born December 12,
1937. He walked his beats in the lower Polk street area and
Tenderloin until 2001 when he sold his beats and retired.
“Dick” Souza was a well known officer on his beats in a high crime area. He really made a difference in the quality of life with all the residences and business on his beats. He received several commendations from SFPD over his time as a San Francisco Patrol Special Police Officer. Officer Souza passed away on February 5, 2019 in his home in Reno, Nevada, surrounded by family. Our thoughts and prayers are with him and his family. |
Passing of an OfficerThis badge belonged to retired Officer Roger Levitt. It is unknown when he passed, but it was several years ago, as I was just notified by his family. Officer Levitt became a Patrol Special in the 60's and worked part of Pacific Heights and Japantown. He retired in February 1979. I remember sitting in Hippo Restaurant several times at 3am talking with him. He was a good officer. Rest In Peace, Roger.
It
is with a heavy heart that I bring forth this sad news, but last night,
5-12-2018, just after he came on duty in the Bayview police district,
San Francisco Patrol Special Police Officer Samuel Reyes, Star # 2623,
suffered what appears to have been a heart attack,
and passed away.
Officer Reyes was a very well known and respected by all the officers and staff not only in the Bayview by in work with the community he served. He patrolled his "beats" for over 47 years and will be sadly missed by all. I will miss him Officer Alan Byard President San Francisco Patrol Special Police Officers Association |

Leaders of Patrol Special believe that their private security officers are a vanishing breed and blame their dwindling business on the San Francisco Police Department. Pete Suratos reports. (Published Wednesday, Feb. 17, 2016) |
AWARDS(Left to right) SFPD Chief Gergory Suhr, Officer Taswell and Lt. Lim of Mission Station, at the SF Police Commission meeting July 8th, 2015.
On Tuesday, May 19th,
2015, at about 1500 hours, San Francisco Assistant Patrol Special
Officer Antjuan Taswell, Star # 2609, was driving to work from his
residence in the east bay, over the San Francisco – Oakland Bay
Bridge, going to his assigned station. He was in uniform and ready
to work, as required.
As he was driving and just after the tunnel, a vehicle in front of him veered across his lane and struck the side of the bridge. The vehicle then swerved back into the left two lanes and struck two other vehicles before swerving once again into the far right lane, again striking the bridge. Officer Taswell stopped his vehicle, as well as other motorists and exited his car to see if aid was needed. At that same time, the female driver of the cause of the accident exited her car, topless, and ran towards San Francisco in the far right lane. Officer Taswell gave chase as well as several other drivers. The female driver then took off the rest of her clothes and after running about 30 feet, jumped up on top of the bridge guard rail yelling she was going to jump and kill herself. Officer Taswell determined that she was suicidal and began to engage her in conversation in an attempt to convince her to come down from the railing. After a few minutes, Officer Taswell was successful in convincing her to come down from the bridge railing. She asked Officer Taswell if she could use his cell phone to “tweet” to her family and friends that she was going to jump off the bridge. Officer Taswell used this opportunity to lure her off the bridge rail. Officer Taswell signaled to other motorists to distract her and when that happened, he subdued her, placing her in handcuffs. Shortly thereafter, the California Highway Patrol arrived and took custody from him. The C.H.P. had called an ambulance and upon arrival the female was placed into the back of the ambulance. 04-25-2015

Officer
James "Jim" Lobao, Sr. |
I have the sad task of bringing you notification of San Francisco Patrol Special Police Officer James "Jim" Lobao, Sr. whom passed away yesterday. He was in his early 90's. He worked in the Taraval Police District his entire career dating back to the early 60's. He was a highly respected officer in the community he served and I had the great privilege of meeting him at Park & Shop Supermarket when he and Officer Serge White would come in for coffee and pie. It was Officer Lobao, Sr. and Officer Serge White that recruited me to become a Patrol Special Police Officer and after graduating from the San Francisco Police Academy for Reserve and Patrol Special Police I started working for them in 1968. They both taught me the in's and out's while being on patrol especially working in the Haight/ Ashburyfrom 1968 through 1972 with all three of us surviving that era. Officer Lobao, Sr. was especially proud to have his son become a San Francisco Patrol Special Police Officer and proud to have his son work with him. Officer Lobao, Sr. will be missed and I know I speak for all of us in sending his family our condolences. Officer Labao, Sr. was a great friend to all. "Rest In Peace Jim" |
Passing of an Officer"Officer Jane” as she was known as, began her law enforcement career in Hawaii, first with the sheriff’s department and later with the Honolulu Police Department. During her time in Hawaii, she graduated from Chau-min-ade University, a Jesuit school. She moved to California and was accepted into California law enforcement training. Officer Warner worked for a time in the San Anselmo’s sheriff’s department. She later chose to join the San Francisco Patrol Special Police, which became her life career and her passion. She continued her education, graduating from the University of San Francisco. She provided patrol in the Castro, Noe Valley, and Mission neighborhoods for over 18 years, and quickly became a much loved, trusted, and appreciated neighborhood officer who embodied the value the Patrol Special Police Officers provide to neighborhoods across the city. I honor of her service to the community, The City of San Francisco and her friends erected a plaque and the plaza at 17th. and Castro was renamed to “Jane Warner Plaza” on November 7th, 2010, her 54th. birthday. We miss you Jane and think about you every day. May peace be with you. |
